Appointed in the summer of 2004 by La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Laura Olhasso, the OneCity/OneBook Committee currently consists of eighteen members. We come from many walks of life: local and Los Angeles newspapers, the high school staff, the public library, the Parks and Recreation Commission, the business community, and others. What we have in common is our love for the written word.
Our first selection, in 2004, was Travels With Charley In Search of America, by John Steinbeck. Lectures and discussions were held on two separate evenings, with funds for books and publicity provided chiefly by the Friends of The Library.
Our 2005 selection was The Soloist, by La Cañada Flintridge author, Mark Salzman, and the city graciously helped supplement the donations of local businesses and the Friends of the Library with a contribution of its own. A single event at La Cañada High School drew over twice as many participants as the year before.
In 2006, we chose the 2006 Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, March, by Geraldine Brooks. Three separate events — a tea, a film screening, and panel discussion — were made possible by a generous contribution from the city council.
The committee meets monthly at the County of Los Angeles Public Library.
We always welcome new members.
